AutoSSL has been implemented on most shared hosting packages, which automatically installs free SSL certificates for domains on the account.
The script installing the certificates runs overnight.
Some users may receive an email stating the following:
The "cPanel" AutoSSL provider could not renew the SSL certificate without a reduction of coverage because of the following problem
The next part will vary depending on the problem it encountered.
The most common issues are as follows:
404 error.
This is normally caused by the domain being pointed to a third party and therefore the SSL certificate cannot be automatically installed.
403 (Forbidden). A DNS (Domain Name System) or web server misconfiguration may exist.
This is normally caused by a .htaccess file re-writing all URLs. so the server cannot automatically install and verify the SSL certificate. To resolve the error you'd need to edit the .htaccess file so it excludes the .well-known folder and sub-folders.
If you receive one of these emails and aren't sure why it couldn't be installed then please submit a support ticket with an attachment of the email, in .txt format, so we can investigate and advise accordingly.
If you want to turn the feature off then you can do so on the "SSL/TLS Status" page within cPanel.
